For many young people across Africa, questions about purpose, vocation, and life direction can feel overwhelming. Economic uncertainty, social pressures, and personal challenges often leave youth confused about their future. Recognizing this need, the Ubuntu4Peace program organized a Vocational Orientation Seminar at Mariapolis Piero, Kenya in 2024.

The week-long gathering brought together 47 young people from 10 African countries, creating a diverse environment where participants could reflect, learn, and share their journeys. It was more than just a seminar — it was a space of community, where young people discovered that they were not alone in their struggles, and that guidance and clarity were possible.

The program was designed around holistic formation, integrating workshops on discernment, emotional management, personal development, and spirituality. Participants were encouraged to reflect on their personal stories, identify their talents, and explore how their skills could serve their communities. Facilitators also guided them through group discussions, prayer, and moments of silence, helping them connect their inner experiences with their future decisions.

One of the participants, Yvonne from Kenya, came to the seminar feeling discouraged and uncertain about her future. “Amid confusion and discouragement,” she shared, “I discovered that I have a call to life instilled in me by Christ. I now have tools to build my life holistically.” Her testimony echoed the experiences of many other participants who found renewed hope and direction during the seminar.

The seminar also included practical sessions on managing emotions, handling stress, and setting realistic goals. Through these, participants learned that vocational orientation is not only about career choices, but about shaping a meaningful life that balances personal growth with service to others.

Beyond the workshops, the most impactful element was the sense of fraternity. Coming from different cultures and backgrounds, the youth discovered unity through shared experiences. They played together, sang, and celebrated their diversity, embodying the Ubuntu principle: “I am because we are.”

At the end of the seminar, many participants expressed how the experience had transformed their outlook. Several committed to mentoring younger peers back in their countries, ensuring that the knowledge they gained would ripple outward. Others spoke of clearer decisions regarding education and vocation, while some committed to community projects as a way of living out their calling.

The success of the Vocational Orientation Seminar highlights the strength of Ubuntu4Peace’s approach — combining formation, community, and values to empower Africa’s youth. It demonstrated that when young people are given the space and tools to reflect on their lives, they are capable of making courageous choices that benefit not only themselves, but also their families and communities.

For Yvonne and many others, the seminar was a turning point. It reminded them that their lives have meaning and that their decisions can shape a future filled with purpose and service. This is the essence of Ubuntu4Peace: helping young people discover their vocation while walking together in fraternity.
