Across Eastern Africa, the spirit of unity and fraternity continues to take root through the initiatives of Focolare New Humanity Africa. Guided by the vision of a more peaceful and inclusive society, the Projects Office — based at Mariapolis Piero in Juja, Kenya — coordinates a range of programs that empower individuals, strengthen communities, and promote sustainable development.

Founded in 2017 as part of the international Focolare Project Office network, the Eastern Africa office was established to raise funds, manage projects, and build local capacity in project management and community development. Over the years, it has become a vibrant hub of collaboration, touching lives across Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Burundi, and beyond.

Building Peace and Dialogue

One of Focolare’s key contributions to the region is its consistent promotion of peacebuilding and intercultural dialogue. Through initiatives such as Ubuntu4Peace and Sports4Peace, young people are being equipped with practical skills and experiences that foster empathy, cooperation, and mutual understanding.

The Ubuntu4Peace program provides holistic formation rooted in the African philosophy of Ubuntu — “I am because we are.” It helps youth become agents of reconciliation and social change. Meanwhile, Sports4Peace transforms simple games into tools of healing and trust-building, especially in regions recovering from conflict, such as Ethiopia and South Sudan.

These programs demonstrate that peace is not only achieved through negotiation or policy but also through human encounters, relationships, and shared joy.

Education and Leadership for a New Africa

Education and leadership development are at the heart of Focolare’s impact. The Together for a New Africa (T4NA) project trains young African leaders to become ethical, innovative, and community-oriented change agents. The project has reached 14 countries through summer schools and ongoing mentorship programs, building a growing network of young leaders committed to building a united continent.

The Centre for Inculturation in Mariapolis Piero complements this work by promoting dialogue between faith and culture. Through its formation schools, interreligious dialogue weeks, and research programs, it provides a platform where spirituality and African values meet — enriching both culture and community development.

Promoting Sustainable Livelihoods

Beyond education and peace, Focolare New Humanity Africa is deeply engaged in addressing poverty and inequality through projects like Empower to Care. Based in Mariapolis Piero, the initiative trains women and young people in practical skills such as tailoring, entrepreneurship, and ICT. Many participants have gone on to start small businesses, support their families, and contribute to their communities’ economic growth.

A Shared Vision for the Future

Focolare’s approach in Eastern Africa is not about imposing solutions but empowering communities to become protagonists of their own change. Each project reflects the same guiding principle — that unity, when lived in everyday life, can transform societies from within.

As the Projects Office continues to expand its reach and strengthen partnerships with local and international organizations, the dream remains the same:

To build a more peaceful, just, and united Africa — one community at a time.
